Plantar fasciitis: Is barefoot footwear the solution?

Plantar fasciitis, a common and painful foot disorder, affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by sharp, stabbing pain in the heel that is worst in the morning or after a long period of rest. The cause is inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot and connects the heel bone to the toes.

Traditional treatment for plantar fasciitis often involves rest, stretching, icing, anti-inflammatory medications, and orthopedic shoe inserts. In recent years, however, there has been increasing evidence that barefoot footwear can be an effective supplement to treatment.

How does barefoot footwear help?

Barefoot footwear, also known as minimalist footwear, is designed to simulate walking barefoot. It has a thin, flexible sole that allows for natural foot movement and strengthens the muscles of the foot and leg.

Here are several ways in which barefoot footwear can help alleviate plantar fasciitis:

  • Muscle strengthening: Barefoot footwear promotes the activation and strengthening of the foot and leg muscles, which help stabilize the plantar fascia and reduce the load on it.
  • Improved proprioception: Barefoot footwear allows the foot to feel the terrain and adapt to it, which improves proprioception (the perception of body position and movement). This can help improve balance and coordination, which may reduce the strain on the plantar fascia.
  • More natural movement: Barefoot footwear allows the foot to move more naturally, which can help reduce tension in the plantar fascia.
  • Reduction of inflammation: Some research suggests that barefoot footwear can help reduce inflammation in the plantar fascia.

What does the research say?

A 2013 study published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association found that patients with plantar fasciitis who wore minimalist footwear experienced significant improvement in pain and function compared to those who wore traditional footwear with arch support[1].

Another 2018 study published in Foot and Ankle International found that patients with plantar fasciitis who wore barefoot footwear experienced significant improvement in foot strength and flexibility compared to those who wore traditional footwear[2].

Is barefoot footwear for everyone?

Although barefoot footwear can be beneficial for many people with plantar fasciitis, it is not suitable for everyone. If you have severe plantar fasciitis or other health issues, it is important to consult your doctor or physical therapist.

"Barefoot footwear represents a promising adjunct to the treatment of plantar fasciitis. By strengthening the foot muscles, improving proprioception, and promoting more natural movement, it can help alleviate pain and improve function. If you are considering trying barefoot footwear, it is important to start slowly and gradually."
