How to exercise your feet to keep them in great shape?
Our feet take quite a beating every day; they support us on all our journeys, across various surfaces, in different footwear, and often under less than ideal conditions. If we don’t take care of our feet to keep them in good condition, it can manifest not only as foot pain but also as a range of deviations from the proper state of the musculoskeletal system. In addition to appropriate footwear, a number of simple exercises also contribute to foot health. What are they, and why should you do them?
Exercise your feet by walking barefoot on soft surfaces
Those who have transitioned to barefoot footwear certainly know this advice: before you switch from regular shoes to barefoot shoes for good, you should work on your feet. Because of the restrictive cut of conventional footwear, our feet tend to be weak and need to be activated.
To minimize the shock to your feet when switching to barefoot footwear, it is advisable to find places and opportunities to walk barefoot. Your feet will certainly struggle with the fact that they suddenly have to process stimuli they were not used to. Lawns, forest paths, and trails are ideal for barefoot walking. Gradually increase the distance and duration. Conversely, avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces, such as sidewalks, in the beginning. A great helper for transitioning to barefoot footwear and for strengthening weakened muscle chains are our Journey series sandals, which feature a 10mm sole that protects the foot from injury and impact.
Take foot strengthening and stability improvement to the next level
If you want to focus mainly on strengthening your arches and overall foot stability, a balance beam is an ideal tool. A balance beam and the exercises performed on it have many benefits. First and foremost, they engage the deep muscle groups of the entire body, which are otherwise very difficult to train.
When exercising on a balance beam, you activate the muscles in your feet, and thanks to the innate grasping reflex, you primarily exercise the transverse arches. This allows you to work on strengthening your entire musculoskeletal system in just a few moments while watching TV. If you are just starting with foot-focused exercises, it is advisable to just walk slowly along the beam. Gradually, you can add various exercises.
What are the benefits of regular foot exercise?
If you perform the exercises mentioned above diligently, you will notice the effects relatively quickly. At the end of each workout, you will feel the muscles in your feet. Gradually, you will notice that you perceive your feet differently, and not just when walking.
Regular foot exercise will also reflect in proper walking technique and your overall body posture. Your feet will not only be stronger but also warmed up and well-circulated; this will bring you closer to our shared goal: to once again feel a solid connection to the ground. So join us in working to ensure your feet remain a solid support and provide you with stability.
