When it comes to children, footwear becomes crucial with their very first steps. As your first choice of shoes, we recommend flexible barefoot shoes that are designed to mimic the natural shape of a child's foot, allowing full range of movement during both walking and crawling. It's crucial that the shoe doesn't restrict the foot in any way. Young children cannot express if their shoes are uncomfortable, so it's important you pay extra attention when selecting their footwear.
From our own experience, we understand that measuring children's feet and trying on shoes can sometimes be a challenging task, especially with little ones who can hardly sit still.
At Nallu, we strive to make the selection of children's footwear as easy as possible for you. As parents ourselves, we know it might not always be straightforward, which is why we offer a practical PDF template to help with choosing the right size, including the ideal width of the shoe. This template can be found in the product details section. Simply print out the required size, make sure the printer is set to 100% scale. Place the template next to the child's foot or have the child stand on the template.
How to Choose the Right Size for Our Little Ones Without a Template?
If you don't have access to a printer to easily print out the template, you can measure the foot using the following method:
The basic method involves tracing the child's foot or using an appropriate measuring tool. When using a measuring tool, hold it against the heel with one hand and rotate it towards the furthest point of the foot, which is the longest toe (not necessarily the big toe), with the other hand. Repeat this process for both feet, as the size can vary between them. Then, proceed with the larger of the two measurements obtained.
To the measured foot length, add an extra space of 5-10mm, as recommended by the Czech Shoe and Leather Association for children's footwear. The size of the extra space should be adjusted based on the total length of the foot. The maximum of the added extra space may not be suitable for the smallest children's feet. Based on these measurements, you can determine the shoe size here.

The width of the foot is equally important and can be accurately assessed either by the outline of the foot or our previously mentioned template. When choosing the right footwear, pay attention not only to the widest part of the foot but consider several points.
The most important is the width in the toe area to prevent deformation of the child's foot. Properly chosen footwear must not squeeze the toes together and should allow for the full spreading of the toes while walking. At the same time, you should not overlook the fact that the shoe must fit well around the heel to ensure the foot stays in place and does not slide forward.
TIP: Be cautious with tights as well, since they can be too tight and cause deformities of the feet.
